Immune Support While Traveling

I was recently asked how to stay healthy when traveling. There are a few things that can really help!

Vitamin A. This vitamin supports the immune activation of the mucous membranes, namely secretory IgA. 10,000iu before, during and after the trip will help. Take with a meal that has fat is best as it is a fat soluble vitamin.

Vitamin C. This helps the white blood cells fight viruses and helps squelch the free radicals produced during the fight. 500-1000mg 3 x day before during and after will help. Taken with or without food is fine.

Vitamin D. This stimulates the T-cells and macrophages of your immune system, making them more active. 10,000iu per day before, during and after the trip. Take with a meal that has fat is best as it is a fat soluble vitamin.

Mushrooms. These are so good at supporting the immune system. Naturopathic oncologists use them to bring back the immune system after chemotherapy. This one from iherb is very good.

Zinc citrate. Another one that great at boosting the immune system. Taking 30mg before, during and after the trip is good. Make sure you take with food.

Hydration. Airplane trips are very dehydrating. If you can drink 16 oz per hour, you will stay well hydrated. This dehydration is a big issue if it happens on a plane because your mucous membranes become compromised, and dry, and this allows pathogens to enter right into the blood stream.

Nasal spray. I recommend taking a saline nasal spray and if you feel your nose is dry, use the spray to keep your nasal passages moist. I use XLEAR which is a base of saline but also has herbs that are antiviral/bacterial.

If you do begin to feel something coming on, you can double all of these dosages for up to 3 days, then you should be feeling better and can stop or resume the lower dosages.

Happy healthy travels!
